Abstract

Relevance: Demodex infestation is a common cause of blepharitis and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, often underdiagnosed. It can affect ocular health and comfort in contact lens users. Its detection and management are key to improving both clinical outcomes and long-term lens tolerance.

Abstract: Demodex is associated with ocular surface dysfunction, which affects contact lens tolerability and can lead to discontinuation of use. Soft contact lenses create an environment conducive to Demodex proliferation. In scleral lens wear, their vaulted design can trap debris, inflammatory mediators, and microorganisms, including Demodex mites. This accumulation may potentially contribute to ocular surface inflammation and exacerbate Demodex-related blepharitis. Scleral lens use also alters tear exchange and may compromise the eye’s natural defense mechanisms, leading to increased susceptibility to Demodex colonization.
